Inmate Dog Adoption Program - Available Dogs
The dogs featured below were trained for eight weeks at a prison in Florida by state inmates, who were themselves trained by a professional dog trainer. The dogs were taught how to sit, stay, come and walk to the left and slightly behind their owner. They are housebroken and crate trained, and have all their shots. They've been spayed or neutered and many are microchipped. Adoption costs vary per dog.

Comments: When I first got to UTOPIA I was confused and scared. This one man grabbed my leash and took me into a room where all these men were sitting in a circle. We walked around this circle until he stopped and he gave my leash to this nice man – who turned out to be my trainer. All of a sudden I had to do everything my trainer wanted me to do: sit, stay, wait, come, down. Wow, what a lot of work. After work I got to play and run with the other 11 dogs. I was very depressed before I got to the UTOPIA program, but now I don’t have time to be depressed. I am starting to be a very happy dog. Every day it was all work and commands, and now I can do all of them in my sleep. I am a very nice and mellow dog and I deserve to belong to a great family. I love people and other dogs. I promise to take care of the family who adopts me. I will make a great companion.

Comments: I was a stray picked up by Tallahassee Animal Services and I was shy and depressed at first. I started out being very unsure of humans and after time I started trusting them. They taught me how to sit, down, wait till called on, stay in a spot until asked to move. Also, I know my name and no matter what I’m doing when I hear “Baby no!” I will come to my trainer. I play with other dogs but I prefer one or two dogs because I get frightened with a group of dogs and will stay by myself. I also like to hang out with my trainer. I’m very loving once I get to know you and I know we both will be very happy.

Comments: When I first saw Daphne she was acting very skittish and scared. She was very skinny and wouldn’t listen. I started to work with her; feeding her, showing her affection and love, and Daphne quickly put on weight and started to listen. As time went on Daphne learned to do all the commands I taught her: sit, down, wait, stay and come. She is a very smart dog. She loves to play and show affection – she is a very loving dog. She is still a little skittish around loud noises or some moving objects, but she has come a long way. Daphne will make a good pet for inside or outside. The one and most important thing is that Daphne needs to be shown love and affection, and she will return it. She has made these last eight weeks a pure joy for me. I enjoyed training her but what I enjoyed most was how Daphne seems to know when I’m feeling a little down. She will look up at me and turn her head back and forth as if she was telling me something. Then I will take her out of her crate and she will lick my face and I feel better. She is such a great dog.

Comments: I’m a one year old Callahoula mix with fantastic blue eyes. I have done really well in the UTOPIA program, according to my trainer. When I first got here, I liked to pull on my leash. I have learned to walk beside my trainer without pulling on my leash. I can sit, down, stay, wait and come on command. I have also learned to roll over and to shake hands on command. My trainer thinks I’m the smartest dog in the whole program. He says there is nothing I can’t learn to do with a little time and patience. I have a great personality and get along well with the other dogs. I rally love people and I am eager to please. I love to be loved and rubbed on. My trainer thinks I would make a great pet because I am so loveable. I look forward to meeting you and showing you what I know.
