Officer Arrested at Walton Correctional Institution

Walton CI Correctional Officer Captain David Ciappio arrested for malicious battery

DEFUNIAK SPRINGS, Fla. — The Florida Department of Corrections' (FDC) Office of Inspector General (OIG) announced the arrest of Correctional Officer Captain David Ciappio. Ciappio is charged with violations stemming from an incident which occurred on Tuesday, May 30 at Walton Correctional Institution. Ciappio was charged with malicious battery of an inmate.

The OIG acknowledges the cooperation and assistance provided by the 1st Judicial Circuit of Florida and the Walton County Sheriff's Office.

"Correctional officers must abide by and adhere to the same laws they take an oath to uphold and enforce. Any form of inmate abuse is not only unacceptable but goes against the fundamental mission and values of the Florida Department of Corrections," said Florida Department of Corrections Secretary Ricky Dixon. "We appreciate the Inspector General's swift action and will work with them to thoroughly investigate the incident. These events serve as a reminder that no one is above the law."

Ciappio was dismissed from the Department effective June 1, 2023. The incident is currently under investigation by the Office of the Inspector General.
