Historical Information: Florida State Prison – West Unit was established in July 1987 as a result of the merger of two satellites units (New River Annex and Butler Transient Unit) of the Reception and Medical Center. The West Unit was formerly known as the Butler Transient Unit and was opened in August 1975 to house the overflow transient population from the Reception and Medical Center. In 1991 the mission was changed to accommodate long term inmates. Prior to March 30, 2009, this facility was named New River West Correctional Institution.
