Historical Information: The Reception and Medical Center (RMC) was established in 1968 with two distinct missions; to process new commitment male inmates into the system as well as provide medical care to inmates from all corners of the state. In 1972 a fully licensed 120 bed hospital opened within the secure perimeter of the Main Unit. Due to centralized geography and a fleet of transport buses, RMC quickly grew into a primary transportation hub for the Department. Through the years the medical mission expanded to include a dialysis and cancer treatment center, also located within the secure perimeter of the Main Unit. In addition, RMC now operates a secure ward at Memorial Hospital of Jacksonville. RMC West Unit and Work Camp are also located on the properties adjacent to the Main Unit, with maximum capacities of 1148 and 432 respectively.
