Historical Information: New River C.I. was established in July 1987 as a result of the merger of two satellites units (New River Annex and Butler Transient Unit) of the Reception
and Medical Center. The Main Unit was formally known as the New River Annex and was first occupied in October 1982 to house the overflow transient population of the Reception
and Medical Center. In 1991 the mission was changed to accommodate long term inmates.
The New River C.I. O-Unit (formerly Florida State Prison O-Unit) was built in 1955 as a maximum security unit housing close custody inmates. In 2009 the O-Unit was transferred to New River CI and is now utilized as a work camp, housing minimum and medium custody inmates.
The mission of New River C.I. is to provide and protect the public safety, to ensure the safety of Department personnel, and to provide proper care and supervision of all offenders under our jurisdiction while assisting, as appropriate, their reentry into society.
