The Bureau of State Investigations directs a network of sworn Investigators who conduct criminal, administrative and internal affairs investigations throughout the state. Investigators also work closely with the Office of the State Attorney’s and other local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.  Once an administrative or internal affairs investigation is closed by the OIG, it is referred to the appropriate Bureau for action.

The Bureau oversees several related activities, including:

  • All activities of the agency required by the Whistle-blower’s Act.
  • The Bureau's Interdiction Unit conducts contraband interdiction operations at various field locations.
  • The Inmate Drug Testing Unit administers a statewide program in which randomly selected samples of the inmate population are tested each month for illegal substances.
  • The "Prison Tips" program collects criminal intelligence on criminal activity, both inside and outside the department, from inmates, probationers, and other persons who may have knowledge of this type of activity. The program allows inmates to provide anonymous tips via telephones located at prison facilities, and provides a toll-free number (866-246-4412) which can be called from outside the facilities.
  • The Use of Force Unit reviews all incidents of physical force at state correctional facilities, probation and parole offices, and private facilities to ensure compliance with established rules, procedures and statutes.
  • Assure training requirements are kept up to Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission requirements.
