On July 16, 1962 Governor Cecil Farris Bryant appoints Louie L. Wainwright (Superintendent of Avon Park C.I.) as Director of the Division of Corrections. He remains in this position for the next quarter of a century, which will include a total of four agency name changes, and leave this position on December 31, 1986.

Fl. Gov. Bryant, Sen. C. Johns, Director L. Wainwright and Rep. E.C. Rowell break ground for Sumter Correctional Institution.
Groundbreaking -- (L to R) Florida Governor Farris Bryant, Senator Charley Johns, Director Louie L. Wainwright and Representive E.C. Rowell (who later becomes Speaker of the House), break ground for Sumter Correctional Institution (which will open in 1965).
