Currently, 79.2% of the department's fleet meets or exceeds the DMS standards for disposal. The criteria is different for each type vehicle with the typical standard being 8 years or 80,000 miles for sedans, pickups and vans. The current average age/mileage for all department vehicles is 10 years and 112,000 miles. Department vehicles are used in assignments such as perimeter security, transport, work squads, maintenance, administration, warehouse, K9, farm and laundry.
Dependability and condition of fleet is a public, staff and inmate safety issue. When transport vehicles breakdown in route, inmates must be offloaded and reloaded in a non-secure environment, typically with only 2 officers. Depending on the distance from the nearest facility, it may take several hours for help to arrive.
This request includes replacement of only a portion of the department’s trucks, sedans, vans and wagons over 12 years of age and 120,000 miles.
