Inmate Population

More than Half of All Inmates
Serving 85% of Sentences

Offenders who committed their offenses on or after October 1, 1995 are required to serve a minimum of 85% of their court-imposed sentence prior to their release. On June 30, 2001, more than half (63.0%) of all inmates in prison had been sentenced under this law, meaning they will serve at least 85% of their sentences, and that number is expected to increase annually. The average percentage of sentence served for released offenders has significantly increased in the last 10 years, from 33.9% in June 1991 to 82.8% in June 2001.
