Agency Accomplishments
Re-entry
The Department’s first transitional prison, Demilly Correctional Institution in Polk
City, officially opened on Friday, March 20, 2009. Demilly’s mission is to prepare
inmates for re-entry back into communities by emphasizing education, substance
abuse treatment and re-entry skills. Re-entry is an anti-crime approach which reduces
victimization, recidivism and state spending. The goal of the re-entry effort is to
bring our 32.8% recidivism rate down. Demilly CI houses 350 adult male inmates with
three years or less remaining on their sentences, preparing many for work release
and providing life skills training in areas such as budgeting and preparing for job
interviews and vocational training.
