Most Admissions (57.7%) New to Florida Prisons

Prior commitments refers to any previous occasion that an inmate served time in the Florida prison system. This does not include supervision, such as probation. Nor does it include inmates who may have been in county jails in Florida, or in other state systems or in the Federal prison system.

• Some (42.3%) of the offenders who were admitted to the Florida state prison system in FY 2008-09 had been in state prison in Florida before, and that number has decreased slightly over this past year.
  
  
• 20%of the offenders who were admitted to the Florida state prison system in FY 2008-09 had been in prison in Florida once previously, and 9.6% had been in twice previously. Furthermore, almost eight percent had been in prison in Florida four or more times in the past.
  
  
• For FY 2008-09, the following types of prison admissions had no previous Florida prison commitments: sex offenders (72.8%), females (70.3%), those ages 50 and over at admission (42.2%) and drug offenders (53.3%).
