Three of Every Four Department of Corrections Employees is a Correctional Officer or a Correctional Probation Officer

As of June 30, 2009, the Florida Department of Corrections (DC) had a total of 27,027 employees, including 20,535 or 76.0% certified officers in institutions or probation/parole offices.  Of the 18,201 certified employees in institutions, 12,615 (69.3%) are correctional officers, 4,519 (24.8%) are sergeants, 505 (2.8%) are lieutenants, and 310 (1.7%) are captains.

Health Care staff (professional, managerial, and support) represent 6.6% of DC employees, while programs for inmates and offenders, and chaplaincy staff total only 1.7% of DC employees.

Agency support staff total 15.7% of all DC staff. The support staff in central office, region offices, and institutions comprise 12.9% and community corrections support staff comprise 2.8%.

Institution and community corrections support includes management, professional, and clerical support in areas such as inmate grievances, probation/parole data entry, inmate classification, food service, and maintenance and construction. Less than 3% of staff provide management and administrative support in the Department’s Central Office and regional service centers, including Personnel functions, staff development, research, purchasing, budget, finance and accounting, information technology, and upper management. 

The average DC employee is 41 years of age and has been with the agency for almost nine years.   More than 94% of DC employees are in the state’s Career Service pay plan, 6% are Selected Exempt Service (SES), and 0.1% are Senior Management Service.
