89.9% of inmates in prison on June 30, 2013 were serving sentences under the 85% law
Offenders who committed their offenses on or after October 1, 1995 are required to serve a minimum of 85% of their court-imposed sentences prior to their release. On June 30, 2013, 89.9% (90,719), of all inmates in prison were serving their sentence under this law, meaning they will serve a minimum of 85% of their sentences. As more inmates are admitted with offenses after October 1, 1995, the percentage of current inmates required to serve at least 85% of their sentences has steadily risen from 87.0% in 2009 to 89.9% in 2013, with just a slight decrease from last year.
