Inmate Population

90.4% of inmates in prison on June 30, 2014 were serving sentences under the 85% law

Offenders who committed their offenses on or after October 1, 1995, are required to serve a minimum of 85% of their court-imposed sentences prior to their release.

On June 30, 2014, 90.4% or 91,259 of all inmates in prison were serving their sentence under this law, meaning they will serve a minimum of 85% of their sentences.

As more inmates are admitted with offenses after October 1, 1995, the percentage of current inmates required to serve at least 85% of their sentences has steadily risen from 89.0% in 2010 to 90.4% in 2014, with just a small increase over last year's 89.9%.
