Inmate Admissions: TABE (Tests of Adult Basic Education) Scores at Admission FY 2015-16

Inmates admitted to the Department tested around the 6th Grade Level: approximately 64.5% below GED Prep Level.

Of all the scores analyzed, the median test score (half the scores were above and half were below this score) was 6.8.

  • About 39.3% of the inmate admissions during FY 2015-16 were classified as having basic literacy skills (1.0 to 5.9 grade levels).
  • Approximately 25.2% were classified as having functional literacy skills (6.0 to 8.9 grade levels).
  • 33.5% of the inmate admissions during the fiscal year had GED Prep skills (9.0 to 12.9 grade level).

Inmate Population: TABE (Tests of Adult Basic Education) Scores as of June 30, 2016

As of June 30, 2016, the median grade level achieved by inmates tested was: 7.3.

Periodically, inmates are tested to determine their educational grade level in the form of a school grade level.

Of all scores analyzed, the median test score (half the scores were above and half were below this score) was 7.3 for the inmate population on June 30, 2016, slightly higher than the 6.8 level for inmates who were admitted to prison during FY 2015-16.

  • On June 30, 2016, 61.4% of inmates tested had not achieved GED Prep literacy skills, meaning they scored less than the ninth grade level.
  • 38.6% had GED Prep literacy skills (ninth-grade literacy skills or better).
