Prior Commitments to the
Florida Department
of Corrections
(Inmate Population on June 30, 2000)
Prior commitment refers to any previous occasion that an inmate served time in the Florida Prison system. This does not include supervision, such as probation. Nor does it include inmates who may have been in county jails in Florida, or elsewhere, in other state systems or in the Federal prison system.
- The number of inmates in prison on June 30 who had been in Florida prisons previously has decreased almost 10% in the last five years, from 57.2% in 1995 to 48.5% in 2000.
- Of the 36,677 (51.5% of the inmate population) in prison on June 30 who had no prior Florida prison commitments, 52.3% were white, 44.7% were black and 3.0% were other races.
- Most (93.0% or 34,124) of those with no prior Florida prison commitments were male.
- Twenty percent had been in prison in Florida once previously, and 12.3% had been in twice previously. Eight-and-a-half percent had been in prison in Florida four or more times in the past.
