Optimizing Optimists A County Coalition
by Gwen Gilmore by Patti Harris

Over five years ago, officer Patricia Walker recognized a need for a community service referral source for hard-to-place offenders. She enlisted the help of local businessman, Doug Waters. At the time, Waters was a member of the local Kiwanis Club and he agreed to place offenders in community service activities. He later moved to the Optimist Club but continued to place offenders where their skills could best benefit the community.

Ms. Walker made this referral source known to her fellow officers. As a result, offenders have performed hundreds of community service hours in Santa Rosa County. In fact, offenders trying to avoid community service work because of one excuse or another have found themselves referred to Mr. Waters and "put to work!"

On January 16, officer Walker was recognized for her efforts and work with the Optimist Club and Mr. Waters. We, the staff at 01-1 Milton, are proud of her--good job, Patricia!

Sometimes, an ex-offenders return to the community can be rough. However, in Pinellas County Circuit 06, the DC and local service agencies are giving a helping hand. The Pinellas County Offender Re-entry Coalition is social service personnel, ex-offenders and their families, school board staff, Department of Labor staff and DC staff dedicated to easing the transition for ex-offenders returning to the community after serving a sentence in prison.

Early last Fall, the Coalition held a Showcase of Services. Over 80 state agency representatives and social service providers gathered at the local vocational center to assist ex-offenders. It was a true partnership of local agencies and the community. Attendee’s had the opportunity to obtain identification, job referrals, resumes, mobile health services, counseling, financial assistance and many other services. A continental breakfast as well as a pizza lunch were provided by Goodwill Industries and Coalition members. Over 150 ex-offenders and their families attended the showcase.

The Coalition meets monthly to discuss obstacles ex-offenders meet when coming home and provides a network of services available for them in Pinellas County. The program has been a great success--another example of DC in the Community.
