Wellness

Wellness and healthful living are a craze. Books, magazines, TV shows and endless advertisements all address some form of wellness. It is particularly important in corrections to maintain physical strength and stamina. In this column on wellness, specialists throughout the department will write articles designed for you in corrections.

Wellness is the constant and deliberate effort to stay healthy and achieve the highest potential for well-being. Wellness living requires positive programs to change behavior or improve health and quality of life, prolong life, and achieve total well-being. Charles Darwin believed in the survival of the fittest. But why settle for mere survival when staying healthy is so much better. Here are tips for maximizing your health and well-being.

  • Nutrition: a balanced varied diet of health foods each day, including 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables
  • Regular Aerobic Exercise: minimum 3 times weekly, at least 20 minutes uninterrupted period.
  • Sleep: whatever daily amount that allow you to wake up fully refreshed-usually 8-9 hours.
  • Regular Health Checks: breast or testicular self examination monthly, blood pressure every 1-2 years, cholesterol level every 5 years and other examinations as advised by your health care provider.
  • Immunizations: maximize defenses by keeping up to date on vaccinations
  • Managing Stress: if you don't manage it will manage you
  • Feeding Your Spirit: don't starve the inner you. Live Well and Prosper!
