On March 31, 2003, there were 4,717 inmates in Florida prisons who were listed as confirmed aliens. Most of these (39% or 1,806 inmates) came from Cuba, Mexico (12% or 584 inmates) or Jamaica (10% or 470 inmates). The majority were serving sentences for violent crimes (59% or 2,794 inmates) or drug offenses (22% or 1,054). Newly admitted inmates are referred to Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) agents, working in prison reception centers, who identify and investigate those who may be aliens. Some alien inmates cannot be deported. However, the majority who complete their Florida sentences are released to INS for further immigration processing, including possible deportation.
