Less than 1% of 26,299 Inmates Released in FY 2001-02 were Paroled

Of the 26,299 inmates released from prison in FY 2001-02, only 62 of them were paroled. Fewer and fewer inmates are paroled each year because felony offenders are not eligible for parole if their crimes were committed on or after October 1, 1995, with the following exception. Of those who did commit their crimes after that date, only those who did not receive the death penalty for capital crimes are eligible for parole. Members of the Florida Parole Commission decide who is to be paroled. Parole Commissioners take into account the inmate's activities in prison, crime and input from the victim and/or the victim's family. The Parole Commission is a separate entity from the Florida Department of Corrections.
