Dr. William D. Bales, former Chief of the Bureau of Research and Data
Analysis, has accepted a position at Florida State University as an Associate
Professor in their School of Criminology and Criminal Justice. He leaves
behind a legacy of innovation and integrity. His going-away cake read: "FSU's

In FY 2002-03, there were 75 escapes, none of them from inside a correctional
institution. The majority (91.8%) of the escapes were from non-secure
work release or contract centers. Of the 75 escapes, 67 or 89.3% were
recaptured as of July 17, 2003.
