There were 77,919 inmates in prison on August 31, 2003, compared to 74,031 the previous year (5.3% increase).

Time Served

  • Inmates released from prison in August 2003 served an average of 84.2% of their sentences.

  • 2,059 (84.7%) of the inmates released in August 2003 had one or more sentences that fell under the minimum 85% of sentence served law.

Older Inmates

  • There were 7,859 inmates age 50 or older in prison on August 31, 2003. This is an increase of 12.8% since last year (6,965 inmates on August 31, 2002).


  • The last escape from a secure perimeter was in April 2000. No inmate has escaped from a fenced, secured perimeter for more than three years.
