Offenders on Supervision

On September 30, 2003, there were 152,681 active or active-suspense offenders on community supervision.

Probation 126,792 83.0%

The majority of those on supervision in September were convicted of a property (34.8%) or violent (27.2%) offense.

In September:

  • 8,564 offenders were admitted to supervision
  • 2,246 successfully completed their supervision
  • 4,219 had supervision revoked for a new offense (31.0%) or technical violation (69.0%)

In 1972, inmate Michael V. Costello filed the now famous Costello vs. Wainwright lawsuit which addressed issues of overcrowding, sanitation, food and health care in prisons.
