Offenders on Supervision
On October 31, 2003, there were 152,340 active or active-suspense offenders on community supervision.
Types of Supervision (October 31, 2003)

| Pre-Trial Intervention | 8,067 | 5.3% |
| Post Prison Release | 5,558 | 3.6% |

The majority of those on supervision in October were convicted of a property (34.8%) or violent (27.2%) offense.
In October:
- 8,911 offenders were admitted to supervision
- 2,532 successfully completed their supervision
- 4,466 had supervision revoked for a new offense (30.7%) or technical violation (69.3%)
In 1972, inmate Michael V. Costello filed the now famous Costello vs. Wainwright lawsuit which addressed issues of overcrowding, sanitation, food and health care in prisons.
