Inmates in Prison

There were 79,144 inmates in prison on November 30, 2003, compared to 74,873 the previous year (5.7% increase).

Time Served

  • Inmates released from prison in November 2003 served an average of 84.8% of their sentences.

  • 2,048 (85.1%) of the inmates released in November 2003 had one or more sentences that fell under the minimum 85% of sentence served law.

Older Inmates

  • There were 8,116 inmates age 50 or older in prison on November 30, 2003. This is an increase of 12.1% since last year (7,237 inmates on November 30, 2002).

Escapes

  • The last escape from a secure perimeter was in April 2000. No inmate has escaped from a fenced, secured perimeter for more than three years.
