Currently, 79.2% of the department's fleet meets or exceeds the DMS disposal standards. The average age/mileage of all vehicles is 10 years/112,000 miles. Buses alone average 18 years/190,000 miles. Based on the current fleet of 2,997 vehicles and according to DMS criteria, the department should replace 2,492 vehicles in FY 2006-07. However, the department's recurring appropriation for replacement of motor vehicles is only $420,258.
Although the department has standardized the preventative maintenance and repair processes for each region to ensure efficient utilization of the department's resources, measures have also had to be enacted to attempt to prolong the useful life of the aging fleet such as variations to the suggested preventative maintenance schedule including more frequent inspections and servicing intervals.
