A recent breakthrough in technology has made it possible to compile certain critical Offender-Based Information System (OBIS) information into a user-friendly screen that can be used by officers via a mobile device while in the field. The Mobile Data Access Services Project (MDAS Project) will give probation officers the ability to view and input case notes in real-time by utilizing a laptop computer with an aircard.
In order to monitor and supervise offenders effectively, probation officers need the ability to be constantly updated with new information both in the office and in the field. The MDAS Project will enable officers to access real-time information when they are out of the office doing field work.
The department is requesting General Revenue funding and authority for hardware and aircards. During the first year of the MDAS Project, the department will purchase 1,000 laptop computers and 1,373 aircards (including 373 laptop computers currently in the field). No additional positions are required for the implementation of the MDAS Project.
