Section 3. Length of Sentence
NOTES: This section provides
detailed information on the length of sentence, concentrating
attention on state prison sentences.
FINDINGS:
- The youngest and oldest offenders received the longest
average state prison sentences (Table
1).
- Males received longer prison sentence lengths, averaging
52.6 months, compared to 37.0 for females (Table
2).
- White and black offenders differed little in sentence
length (average 51.9 months for whites 50.9 for blacks),
but "other" offenders were sentenced to more than
10 months above the average for blacks and whites (Table
3).
- Sex and race differences in the length of community control,
probation, and county jail sentences were small. As with
prison sentences, the small number of offenders age 17 and
under received the longest sentences for community control,
probation, and county jail (Tables 5,
6, 7).
