The inmate workers have to complete 40 hours of training, and must be cleared by medical and classification in order to be considered for this voluntary job, which has strict guidelines for acceptance. Their training includes bed making, bathing, feeding inmates, death and dying, positioning, transfers, vigil, and all activities of daily living. The philosophy of those associated with the Palliative Care Unit is that “no man dies alone.” These inmates become the brother, friend, or sons of the men who are dying.
