Hanson and the Palliative Care Unit Staff The Palliative Care Unit (also called the Compassionate Care Unit) at Central Florida Reception Center's South Unit, which began about three years ago, has about 20 specially selected inmates who are scheduled 24/7 to work with the inmates in the unit in this end-stage unit. The inmate workers have to complete 40 hours of training, and must be cleared by medical and classification in order to be considered for this voluntary job, which has strict guidelines for acceptance. Their training includes bed making, bathing, feeding inmates, death and dying, positioning, transfers, vigil, and all activities of daily living. The philosophy of those associated with the Palliative Care Unit is that “no man dies alone.” These inmates become the brother, friend, or sons of the men who are dying. Cox of Union Correctional Institution participated in Career Week speaking to Mrs. D. Wilson’s and two other fourth grade classes at Keller Intermediate School in Baker County. Sergeants Oventrop and Cox utilized a Power Point presentation to discuss the history of the Florida Department of Corrections, employment opportunities within the Department and the benefits of such employment. Following the classroom presentation the students went outside for a presentation by Union Correctional Institutions K-9 unit. Sergeant J. Polk, Correctional Officer S. Henley and Correctional Officer D. Klein, accompanied by two of the units’ bloodhounds, thrilled the students with a discussion of the K-9 unit’s work. In addition, as attested to in this letter, she works on an individual basis with her offenders to help each of them to work towards becoming successful and to avoid returning to prison. Her efforts have been recognized by her offenders, her peers and others in the community where she lives and works.
