of Natural Causes

TALLAHASSEE - Death Row inmate Marvin E. Johnson (DC# 018685/ DOB: 11-27-42) died of an apparent heart attack in his cell Sunday night at Florida State Prison near Starke.

Johnson was pronounced dead at 8:47 pm in the prison infirmary. Correctional officers found him unconscious in his Death Row cell. They performed CPR until emergency medical personnel arrived but he did not regain consciousness. Johnson had a history of cardiac problems.

Johnson was sentenced to death for the 1978 murder of a Pensacola pharmacist and had been on Death Row since 1979. Death warrants were signed in 1982, 1988, 1989 and 1994 for his execution.

Johnson is the fifth Death Row inmate to die this year of natural causes. Inmate Manuel Colina committed suicide in April at Union Correctional Institution in Raiford. The death of inmate Frank Valdez at Florida State Prison in July is being investigated as a homicide. Inmate Allen Davis was executed in July.
