It is with great sorrow that I advise you of a tragic accident that resulted in the death of three inmates, and the injury of ten other inmates and two correctional officers.
The accident occurred at 4:20 p.m., Tuesday, September 2, 1997, on Interstate 10 in Madison County when a department van transporting inmates from Jefferson Correctional Institution to Florida Correctional Institution blew a tire and overturned several times.
The families of the deceased inmates have been notified. The victims are: Rose Daley, Deborah Riddle, and Denise Humble.
Sergeant Robbie Johnson is hospitalized in stable condition. Officer Toni Moten was treated and released.
Five inmates remain hospitalized: Carmen Arevelo, Holly Sandefur, and Sarah Jackson are in stable condition. Monica Baez is in critical condition and Caridad Borges is in serious condition.
Five inmates were treated and released from local hospitals and returned to Jefferson Correctional Institution: Norma Ashley, Denise Hernandez, Myriam Augustin, Phyllis Anderson, and Zilaine Joseph are being monitored and observed in the clinic at the institution.
The department wants to thank the many good people who rendered assistance at the accident site. Several nurses from Lake City were traveling to Tallahassee and made tourniquets for the passengers. The staff from Madison Correctional Institution, local law enforcement and the Florida Highway Patrol responded immediately and remained with the inmates and officers until they were transported to nearby hospitals. The staff members of all local hospitals worked diligently throughout the night to assist the victims. We are grateful for their dedication and professionalism.
Our hearts go out to the victims and their families. We will pray for them and their loved ones.
