Secretary Singletary to visit
Partnership Programs
Tallahassee - Harry K. Singletary, Jr., Secretary of the Department
of Corrections will visit two of the department's partnership
programs on Thursday, October 2, 1997.
At 10:00 a.m., the staff of the Gainesville Work Camp, State
Road 26 East in Gainesville, will conduct a tour of the facility
and will highlight the Inmates Managing and Providing Animal Care
and Training (IMPACT) program that is a partnership with Southeastern
Guide Dog, Inc. The inmates are responsible for providing basic
obedience compliance training to the dogs. After completion of
the program the dogs are returned to Southeastern Guide Dog,
Inc. for additional training and placement. New puppies will
be arriving on Thursday, October 2, 1997. The dogs currently
in training will demonstrate their skills.
At 2:00 p.m., Secretary Singletary will tour Tomoka Correctional
Institution, 3950 Tiger Bay Road, Daytona Beach, including the
area expanded for the Braille and Talking Book Library Services
program. This program is a partnership with the Division of Blind
Services and has been recognized nationally as a model for other
state prison systems. Inmates read and record literature for
the seeing impaired. They also repair, clean and refurbish tape
players, translate braille onto cassette tapes, erasing and recycle
cassettes and repair braille machines.
Media representatives are invited to attend both events . Please
remember that photo identification is required for entrance into
all correctional facilities. Proper dress is required. (No shorts
or cutoffs).
