TALLAHASSEE - Tobacco use by Department of Corrections employees, prisoners and visitors will be banned on DOC property except in designated areas effective Jan. 1.
Supervisors and wardens may designate outdoor areas at their facilities as suitable for tobacco usage. In a departure from past practice, general population inmates may no longer use tobacco in their cells and instead may do so in an outside area designated by the warden. For example, a warden may designate part of the prison's recreation yard as a tobacco usage area for inmates. However, employee housing on DOC property and Death Row inmates are not affected by the ban.
A tobacco cessation program for interested inmates has been in place for the past year. The ban is based on a law (F.S. 944.115) passed by the Legislature this year.
