TALLAHASSEE - The Department of Corrections is easing inmate visitation rules for Christmas. Wardens have been encouraged to make every effort to accommodate as many approved visitors as possible, without compromising security.
The department recognizes that the holidays create a backlog of visitation requests. As Christmas falls on a Saturday this year, officially-approved visitors and minor children will be allowed to visit inmates, regardless if the visitor is normally approved to visit only on a specific day. Wardens have also been encouraged to extend visiting hours and to designate additional visiting areas within their prisons.
Deputy Director of Institutions Richard Dugger notified wardens of this development by memo Wednesday (see attached two pages). Wardens have wide discretion to interpret the memo's instructions according to the specific needs of their prisons.
