TALLAHASSEE - Do you want to know the daily cost of incarcerating a prisoner in Florida? The results of inmate drug tests? How many female inmates are serving time for manslaughter? These questions and more are answered in the 1999-2000 Annual Report on CD-ROM.
The report is the comprehensive guide to the Florida prison system. It is a wealth of information, data and statistics on inmates, institutions, programs, costs and numerous other items and issues that are of interest to the press and public. The CD-ROM provides not only statistics but also a history of the department as well as virtual tours.
"This technology gives the public a window on the operation of the state prison system," said Secretary Michael W. Moore. "It is more convenient and less expensive than publishing a bound document."
Because 2000 marks the turn of the century, a booklet containing the CD-ROM highlights DOC history, accomplishments and recommendations for the future.
The new annual report is also a multi-purpose tool for the department. "Recruitment, especially of correctional and probation officers, is a constant challenge for us," Moore said. "The Annual Report can help us recruit by telling the story of corrections in a way that will make people realize the importance of our mission," he added.
The Annual Report is also available on the DOC website at www.dc.state.fl.us. Annual Reports dating to 1994 are available on the web site under "statistics."
DOC is providing a copy of the report to each member organization of the Capital Press Corps. Additional copies may be requested by calling the public affairs office at (850) 488-0420.
