ASSAULT ADVISORY Correctional Officers Injured by Inmate in Miami
MIAMI - An inmate assaulted a correctional officer at Everglades Correctional Institution Monday afternoon, resulting in injuries to two other officers.
At 2:50 pm, Officer Don Deriggs was escorting inmate Ignacio Magana (DC# 196605/DOB: 1-20-75) to the infirmary for a medical exam. Magana slipped out his handcuffs, grabbed Deriggs' radio and struck him on the head with it. Sgt. Bruce Shaw and Officer Javier Rivera came to Officer Deriggs' assistance and helped subdue the inmate. The inmate sustained injuries in the altercation and was taken to the infirmary where he received sutures to his head.
The officers were treated at a local hospital. Officer Deriggs sustained a laceration over his left eye that required sutures. Officer Rivera has a sprained left shoulder. Sgt. Shaw has a spine contusion sprain. All will be placed on workers' compensation until approved for return to duty.
Inmate Magana was arrested by the Metro-Dade police for battery on a law enforcement officer and is being held at the county jail. He is serving a life sentence for first-degree murder. He received his last disciplinary report on June 5 for threatening a female correctional officer. Background information and photos for all inmates are available on our website at www.dc.state.fl.us under the "inmate population information search."
