ASSAULT ADVISORY Inmate Attacks Correctional Officers at Everglades CI
MIAMI - An inmate attacked four correctional officers at Everglades Correctional Institution this morning.
Inmate Toby Grant (DC# 056417/DOB: 3-4-56) was eating breakfast in the prison dining hall at approximately 7:58 am when officer Nadrian Brinson told him to finish eating. Grant then threw a cup of coffee in the officer's face and punched him in the shoulder.
Sgt. Eduardo Dieguez, Sgt. Clifford Beck and officer Eddie Irizarry arrived to assist officer Brinson. They started struggling with the inmate and fell to the floor. Sgt. Beck administered pepper spray to the inmate, who was eventually subdued.
Sgt. Dieguez complained of back pain and Sgt. Beck has a swollen right wrist and right knee. Prison medical staff examined all officers and officer Irizarry was transported by ambulance to Kendall Regional Hospital where he underwent surgery for a broken right kneecap and torn tendons.
Metro-Dade police arrived at the prison to question inmate Grant. He has abrasions on his face sustained during the struggle and was examined by prison medical staff. He was placed in confinement at Everglades CI pending an evaluation of his status. The Department of Corrections will recommend that he be charged with battery on a law enforcement officer.
Inmate Grant is serving a thirty-year sentence for robbery in Duval County. Further information on Grant and a profile of Everglades CI can be found on our website at www.dc.state.fl.us.
