ASSAULT ADVISORY Correctional Officer Attacked by Inmate at Brevard CI
COCOA - A correctional officer was assaulted by an inmate at Brevard Correctional Institution Wednesday night.
Officer Jason Martin had conducted a search of inmate James Young (DC# T06116) and found two marijuana cigarettes. Martin called for backup when Young lunged at him and grabbed his hand and shirt and started dragging him down a hallway. Both fell to the floor and Young put officer Martin in a chokehold. The inmate continued dragging officer Martin into a bathroom where the inmate flushed the cigarettes down the toilet.
Backup officers arrived to assist officer Martin. The inmate was subdued and shackled. Both officer Martin and Young were taken to the infirmary where they were checked by medical staff. Young was placed in administrative confinement at the prison. Martin may require further medical attention at a hospital. The Department of Corrections is conducting an internal investigation and the case may be referred to the State Attorney's Office for charges against Young.
Young is serving a five-year sentence for crimes committed in Hillsborough County. Detailed information on him and other inmates can be found on our website at www.dc.state.fl.us under the "inmate population information search."
