ASSAULT ADVISORY Inmate Attacks Correctional Officers at NFRC
LAKE BUTLER - An inmate attacked two correctional officers at North Florida Reception Center Tuesday afternoon.
At approximately 12:07 pm, inmate Thomas Hensley (DC# 065362) was being disruptive in the day room of E-dorm. Officer Sherry Norris ordered him to cease being disruptive and attempted to handcuff him. Hensley struck her in the face with his fists and pulled her hair. Officer Norris called for assistance and officer George Green responded. He attempted to pull Hensley away from officer Norris but was knocked to the ground by the inmate. Both officers tried to handcuff the inmate, who continued to resist even after other officers administered pepper spray to him.
Eventually Hensley was subdued, placed in handcuffs, and checked by medical staff. He was later transferred to administrative confinement at Florida State Prison. In 1982 and 1988 he was convicted of battery on a law enforcement officer for assaulting correctional staff while in prison for a 1974 sexual battery conviction.
This latest incident will be referred to the State Attorney's Office for possible charges against Hensley.
Officers Norris and Green were checked by medical staff at the prison and referred to an outside hospital. Officer Norris sustained swelling and bruising to her head and neck and officer Green sustained bruises to his left elbow. Both will return to work later this week.
Information on inmate Hensley is available under the inmate population information search.
Assault Advisory is issued by the Department of Corrections whenever a correctional officer or probation officer is attacked in the line of duty.
