ASSAULT ADVISORY
Inmate Attacks Correctional Officer
at SFRC

MIAMI - An inmate assaulted a correctional officer at South Florida Reception Center this morning.

At approximately 6:30 am, correctional officer M.J. Rodriguez was attempting to place handcuffs on inmate Abelardo Silva (DC# 422095.) The officer managed to apply one handcuff when Silva turned away and swung at the officer with the broken arm of a pair of eyeglasses.

Silva inflicted a small laceration on top of the officer's head and multiple scratches and abrasions to the chest and upper body, including the facial area. Officer Rodriguez also injured his right wrist in the struggle. Other staff arrived to intervene and correctional officer M. Corrales injured his left knee in the struggle with Silva.

Both officers were examined by prison medical staff and instructed to report to their workers' compensation provider for evaluation. Inmate Silva was treated by prison medical staff for a minor laceration above his right eye and superficial abrasions to his face and upper torso. He was subsequently arrested by the Metro-Dade Police Department and charged with aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer. He is currently in the Dade County Jail pending transfer to a close management prison.

Background information on Silva and all inmates is available on our website at www.dc.state.fl.us under the "inmate population information search."

Assault Advisory is issued by the Department of Corrections whenever a correctional officer or probation officer is attacked in the line of duty.
