Inmate Commits Suicide at
Charlotte Correctional Institution

TALLAHASSEE - Inmate James Matteo (DC# V09736; DOB: 4/06/44) committed suicide Saturday at Charlotte Correctional Institution in Punta Gorda.

Correctional officers found inmate Matteo hanging in his cell at 8:30 pm. Prison medical staff attempted to revive him and he was pronounced dead in the prison infirmary at 9:09 pm. The Department of Corrections is conducting an investigation into the death, which is standard practice.

In January, Matteo was sentenced to 15 years for attempted 1st degree murder, shooting missiles into a dwelling and carrying a concealed firearm in Volusia County.
