Inmate Dies at
Columbia Correctional Institution

TALLAHASSEE - Inmate Elton R. Ard (DC#057255) died this morning at Columbia Correctional Institution in Lake City. Ard was serving a life sentence for various charges from Polk County, including robbery with a firearm or deadly weapon, two counts of aggravated assault, and attempted second-degree murder.

Two fellow inmates, Andrew Busby (DC#V03727) and Charles Globe (DC#097707), are suspects in his death. Busby, Ard's cellmate, is serving a life sentence on two counts of attempted premeditated first-degree murder from St. Johns County. Globe is serving a life sentence for charges of sexual battery and kidnapping from Pasco County.

Officers discovered Ard's body in his cell at approximately 8:45 a.m. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

The Department of Corrections inspector general's office, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the State Attorney's Office are investigating the death, which appears to be a homicide. Any charges against Busby or Globe, who were put in confinement at Columbia CI after the incident, will be determined by the State Attorney's Office.

Further information on these inmates can be found on the DOC website at www.dc.state.fl.us under the "inmate population information search."
