Inmate at Lowell CI
Commits Suicide

TALLAHASSEE - Inmate Cautia Spencer (DC# Q07795/DOB: 9-21-83) committed suicide Tuesday evening at Lowell Correctional Institution in Marion County.

Prison staff found inmate Spencer with a sheet tied around her neck and the other end to the window grate in her single cell at 7:33 pm. Prison medical staff unsuccessfully attempted to resuscitate her and also summoned emergency medical personnel. She was pronounced dead at the prison at 7:55 pm.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement, with the assistance of the Department of Corrections inspector general, is investigating the incident. FDLE's involvement is mandated by the 1999 memorandum of understanding between the two agencies regarding the investigation of inmate homicides, suicides and other serious incidents. The medical examiner is also conducting an autopsy.

Inmate Spencer was serving a one year and six month sentence for battery on a law enforcement officer (county jail) in Jackson County.
