Inmate Commits Suicide
at Washington CI

CHIPLEY - Inmate Albert Stephens (DC# 864213/DOB: 9-4-55) committed suicide Thursday afternoon at Washington Correctional Institution.

Correctional officers found Stephens in his cell at approximately 4:00 pm with a sheet tied around his neck. They began CPR and also summoned emergency medical personnel, who transported him to Chipley Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 4:46 pm.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), with the assistance of the DOC inspector general, is investigating the death. FDLE's involvement is mandated by the 1999 memorandum of understanding between the two agencies regarding the investigation of inmate suicides, homicides and other serious incidents.

Stephens was serving a sentence of 7 years and 6 months for burglary/assault in Hillsborough County. Further information is available on our website under the inmate release information search.
