TALLAHASSEE - Inmate Julio Bonchea (DC# M15771) escaped from Calhoun Correctional Institution in Blountstown Sunday afternoon.
"The number one mission of the Department of Corrections is protecting the public," said Secretary Michael Moore. "This escape constitutes a major breach of our mission and of prison security. We will not rest until this inmate is back behind bars."
Bonchea was serving an 18-year sentence for two counts of attempted second degree murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, burglary and grand theft. DOC is working with local law enforcement and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) in the search for inmate Bonchea.
The inmate's brother, Joel Bonchea, visited him at the prison yesterday and it is believed that he aided his brother's escape. Inmate Bonchea was missing when a count was conducted at the prison Sunday at approximately 5:30 pm. DOC is conducting a full investigation into how inmate Bonchea escaped. The findings of the investigation will be used to help prevent incidents like this from happening again.
