Memo to Press:
Execution of Dan Patrick Hauser

FOR: Members of the Press
FROM: C.J. Drake
director, public affairs
DATE: August 15, 2000
RE: Execution of Dan Patrick Hauser

Dan Patrick Hauser has declined any interviews with the press prior to his execution by lethal injection at 6:00 pm EST on August 22 at Florida State Prison (FSP).

Press witnesses and reporters covering the execution must park their vehicles in the press staging area across the road from FSP at all times. Please do not enter the grounds of FSP.

The press witness list will be closed at 12:00 noon EST on Monday, August 21. Substitutions - including substitute alternates - must be called in to the public affairs office at (850) 488-0420. We won't accept substitutions called in after then.

Press witnesses will be provided with note-taking materials prior to the execution. No cell phones, pagers or pocketknives are allowed inside FSP. Witnesses must dress appropriately. No tank tops, t-shirts, shorts or sandals may be worn. Witnesses must carry photo identification. Everyone is subject to search before entering FSP.

The Department of Corrections will conduct a press briefing in the staging area at 11:00 am EST on August 22. Press witnesses for the execution must gather in the staging area at 5:00 pm EST. The names of non-press witnesses will be released just prior to the execution.

Reporters interested in Hauser's crime, trial, appeals or his life in general are urged to research those issues in advance. DOC may not be able to answer press inquiries that are not directly related to Hauser's stay on Death Row or the execution process.

For a description of execution by lethal injection, including the chemicals used, refer to the Florida Supreme Court's opinion in Sims vs. Florida, March 3, 2000, page 19, footnote 17. It can be found at www.flcourts.org (go to press page, then to Supreme Court opinions, then to archived documents.)
