DOC to Honor Fallen Employees
at Ceremony

Memorial TALLAHASSEE - The Florida Department of Corrections will honor employees who died in the line of duty during a memorial service Wednesday, October 18 at 10:00 am at Wakulla Correctional Institution in Crawfordville. The press is invited to cover this event.

Secretary of Corrections Michael W. Moore will join relatives of the deceased employees and elected officials for the service. The nationally-recognized honor guard from Sumter Correctional Institution in Bushnell will also participate. The eight employees to be honored are:

  • Inspector Allen Bernstein, assigned to the Inspector General's Office in Orlando. He died on August 18, 1993 in an automobile accident as he was enroute to Tomoka Correctional Institution in Daytona Beach.

  • Correctional Officer Julie Gabor Caddell was on duty at Florida State Prison near Starke when she suffered a heart attack during a confrontation with an unruly inmate. She died on September 22, 1974.

  • Correctional Probation Officer Lee Chuck Dunn, assigned to the Lake Wales Probation and Parole Office. He died in an automobile accident on January 24, 2000 as he was performing his duties as a community control officer.

  • Correctional Officer Charlie T. Foster was on duty at North Florida Reception Center in Lake Butler when he suffered a heart attack and died on November 27, 1976.

  • Correctional Officer Michael J. McCarthy, assigned to Union Correctional Institution in Raiford, was enrolled in basic recruit training when he suffered a heart attack and died on May 13, 2000.

  • Dr. Joseph O'Lone was on duty at Jefferson Correctional Institution in Monticello when he suffered a heart attack and died on December 14, 1995.

  • Correctional Officer William H. Shaw was on duty at Florida State Prison near Starke when he suffered a heart attack and died on July 18, 1998.

  • Correctional Officer Julian Vazquez was on duty at Tomoka Correctional Institution in Daytona Beach when he suffered an aneurysm and died on April 30, 2000.

Lunch, to which the press is also invited, will be served in the nearby DOC training center following the service.
