Inmate Stabs Fellow Inmate
at Martin CI
INDIANTOWN - An inmate stabbed a fellow inmate at Martin Correctional Institution Wednesday afternoon.
Inmate Jerry Washington (DC# 050695) stabbed inmate James Harrison (DC# 344132) with a 10-inch homemade knife (also known as a "shank") at approximately 5:52 pm. The attack took place in the prison's E dorm. Harrison suffered a punctured lung and cuts in the neck, back, chest and left arm. Washington stopped the attack before correctional officers could intervene. It is not known at this time what motivated the attack or how Washington obtained the knife. Washington and Harrison were not cellmates.
Harrison was taken to Martin Memorial South via ambulance where he remains in stable condition. The Department of Corrections is conducting an internal investigation into the attack. Washington was placed in administrative confinement at Martin CI. Any charges against him will be determined by the State Attorney's Office.
Washington is serving a life sentence for various offenses in Broward County. Harrison is serving a life sentence for first-degree murder in Orange County. Detailed information about these and other inmates can be found on our website at www.dc.state.fl.us under the "inmate population information search."
NOTE: Martin Correctional Institution is not to be confused with the Martin Treatment Center for sex offenders, which is under the jurisdiction of the Department of Children and Families.
