Inmate Attacks Correctional Officer
at Mayo CI

Mayo - An inmate attacked a correctional officer at Mayo Correctional Institution Wednesday afternoon.

Inmate Tyrone Carr (DC# 108535/DOB 1/5/71) attacked Sergeant Phillip Hart at approximately 1:30 pm. Sergeant Hart was counseling inmate Carr when he started to assault the officer. Carr was able to obtain a lock from a door the Sergeant had just opened and started to use the lock as a weapon, hitting the Sergeant.

As the assault moved from the property room to the outside, Officer Lisa Kines tried to intervene and was assaulted, another inmate on the compound tried to assist Sergeant Hart and was also assaulted. Additional staff arrived and were able to subdue inmate Carr as he tried to flee.

Sgt. Phillip Hart has been transported by ambulance to Doctors Memorial Hospital in Perry. Prison medical staff at the institution treated inmate Carr. DOC staff were treated at the institution and all remain on duty.

The Department of Corrections will recommend to the state attorney's office that inmate Carr be charged with battery on a law enforcement officer. An investigation is being conducted and additional charges are likely.

Assault Advisory is issued by the Department of Corrections whenever a correctional officer or probation officer is attacked in the line of duty.
