ASSAULT ADVISORY
Inmate Attacks Correctional Officer
at Walton Correctional Institution

Defuniak Springs - An inmate attacked a correctional officer Tuesday morning at Walton Correctional Institution.

Inmate Curtis Nowling (DC# 881116, DOB 8/9/56) attacked Correctional Officer Wyllie Commander at approximately 8:35 am. Officer Commander was searching Nowling's cell when he discovered a razor blade. When Officer Commander confiscated the razor blade, inmate Nowling became disorderly and grabbed the officer's radio. He began to strike Officer commander in the head with the radio and the officer fell to the floor. Inmate Nowing then began to strike the officer with his hands and kick him with his feet.

Additional staff arrived and subdued the inmate. Officer Commander was checked by prison medical staff and transported to Walton Regional Medical Center where he was treated and later released. He suffered bruises, contusions and abrasions to his forehead and facial area.

Inmate Nowling was treated by prison medical staff and transferred to Washington Correctional Institution in Chipley. The Department of Corrections will recommend to the state attorney's office that he be charged with battery on a law enforcement officer.
